Monte Alegre School
The historic Monte Alegre School built in 1924 has emerged as the centerpiece of the Rubens Moraes Educational Institute (RUMO). Monte Alegre neighborhood was once a thriving sugar mill community. The mill operations were closed in the mid1970s. The school eventually closed as well and the building sat empty for more than a decade.
Fully renovated through The BR-111™ Foundation, the school opened for enrollment in the 2006 school year. Following guidelines outlined through RUMO, 80 children are currently attending the school full-time, receiving a broad curriculum education, transportation, uniforms, school supplies and daily nutritional services.
RUMO seeks to expand the program on an annual basis until we achieve 120 children by the year of 2011 that fits the capacity of the school’s structure. The purpose of this project is to promote our children’s well being, decreasing their exposure to personal and social risk, increase their social education, improve the quality of their interaction with their families, help them overcome violence, health issues, and above all contribute to a better development and up bringing giving them the opportunity of being part of this organization that diligently works on supplying them with the tools to conquer a better future.
